How To Spot Damage

Residential roofs in our area generally last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, depending on the quality of roofing materials originally installed, how well the roof was installed, if the chimney is properly flashed, or whether the roof has been subject to storm damage.

Sometimes an issue can be rectified with a fairly straightforward roof repair. At other times, a larger issue is evident and it may require a full roof repair. It’s always best to get the opinion of a professional, reputable contractor like Rocky Mountain Roofing and Restoration, Inc. The key is to take action before a small problem becomes a larger problem.

The one thing we recommend you NOT do is to attempt to walk on the roof yourself. Leave that to a qualified roofing professional like Rocky Mountain Roofing and Restoration, Inc. to climb your roof, take photos, and give you a complete and accurate report.

We can summarize most roofing problems to these five situations:

  • Interior Water Damage: If you see water spots on your ceiling, call Katchmark right away. What most people don’t know is that ceiling spots typically don’t happen overnight. There’s an underlying situation that’s been building up over time. Delaying any action can only worsen the problem, so call us for a free and informative, detailed inspection and we will help you understand the situation.
  • Flashing, Vent Caps or Gutters Damaged: Soft metal can be easily damaged by storms. Check roof vents, skylights, flashing, metal valleys and any other soft metal on the roof. Soft metal damage will not only show signs of hail, but may also indicate the size of the hail that damaged the roof. Give Rocky Mountain Roofing and Restoration a call to take a first-hand look.
  • Missing, Torn Shingles or Bruised Shingles: When big enough, hailstones can cause circular bruising around the hit itself in a half-moon or full circle shape. This sort of bruising indicates larger hail and a shingle that has been damaged, causing the shingle to fail prematurely over time. Missing shingles means that water from rain or snow can penetrate your roof and reach inside your home. It might reach the attic first and then the highest floor (See “Interior Water Damage”). Any one of these instances should prompt a call to Rocky Mountain Roofing and Restoration.
  • Loose Granules: Check for missing granules that have exposed the substrate, or black layer underneath them. The substrate exposed should look fresh, or not as if it has been exposed to the sun for an extended period of time. This will indicate new hail damage as opposed to anything preexisting. Let us get a good look and give you our professional recommendation on what to do.
  • Siding Damaged: Typically, if you have suffered damage to your siding, the damage will only have been sustained to one or two elevations. This is because a storm generally travels in a singular direction. Still, within any given storm, winds can swirl in any direction, so one storm can actually affect all sides of a given home. Call us and let us take a look.
